When I launched a proper website and started working with folks outside of just record covers and band t-shirts in 2009, I started getting fan emails. Not specifically fan emails because of my illustration work but because people mistook me for Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World actress ‘Danielle Fishel’. I think everyone who emailed me didn’t notice the “lle” at the end of her name- that was missing on my website. For a solid two to three years every 2 or 3 months I would get an email from someone asking for an autographed photo of 'Topanga’. I would have to then give thme the bad news that we are two completely different people. Recently i I received my first text message from a 'Boy Meets World’ fan who was told that my cell phone number was in fact 'Danielle’s’. I was tempted to send a signed George Costanza-ish photo of myself or play along that I was in fact her. Honestly though I would feel bad for messing with people who had mistaken my identity.
A few weeks ago, my friend Martin pointed out that 'Danielle’ was doing a book signing tour that would stop in New York City. So finally after six years of receiving multiple fan emails (and texts) that were not meant for me, I got to meet the very kind and funny 'Danielle Fishel’. Unfortunately, I was second to last in line to get my book signed and a photo op so I felt really weird disclosing this strange connection we share in person. Instead I just took an awkward photo with someone who essentially helped shape my teenage years, got my book signed and gave my sincere thank you’s. Now I have a photo to prove that we are two very different people.
