ICON7 - Providence, RI: The First Four Years

(Photo by Soojin Buzelli - Thanks!)

I want to thank the ICON7: Illustration conference board for letting me organize a talk at ICON. I also want to thank everyone for coming to our talk this past Thursday. It mean’s a lot to me, and I am super flattered.

In case you couldn’t make it to Providence, our panel discussion was between myself, Kelsey Dake, JooHee Yoon, Victo Ngai, and Nick Iluzada. The panel was moderated by the fantastic MC/Illustrator, Kyle T. Webster. We discussed a wide range of topics such as impact art school has had on our careers, self promotion, and our personal choices that have directed our careers. I organized this panel discussion to bring forward young successful illustrators fresh out of school to illustrators who’ve been out for a few years who aren’t yet “seasoned pros.” Organizing this talk was really important because I feel that many of the ICON’s prior speakers are 10-20 years into their careers. I thought it would be rad to hear a few young positive voices about illustration at one of the best conferences that represent our industry.

Outside of our talk, I had a blast attending ICON7 this year. It’s the third ICON I’ve attended and definitely not my last. I look forward to what’s going to happen at the next ICON and I look forward to hearing from all of my new friends that I’ve made over the past few days. Do let me know when you’re in the five boroughs friends!

After four days off, it’s time to get back to work. :)
