I worked on a series of instagram advertisements for Audible, for their project called “Stories that surround you.” Audible ran a contest asking their followers to write in where their Audible books transport them. A few winners were then selected to have their portraits and stories illustrated by myself and a few other illustrators. I illustrated the Young Adult and Mystery categories. Each illustration process is recorded and posted along with the final on instagram.
1. I’m staring at my plump cat, floating there before my eyes. No one had mentioned telekinesis developing as a part of puberty, or that my hands would start to glow with unmistakable magic. (click here to see video)
2. I decide to walk to Jill’s house in the dark. It’s probably not my brightest idea given the recent murders, but sitting alone in the dead car with a dead phone makes me feel… almost dead. The wind is cold and crisp. I can hear the crunching of rocks and leaves beneath my feet. (click here to see video)
3. I am running down a cobblestone street in London, cold rain bites my face. It’s 2am, and everyone knows
bad things happen at this time of night. Lightning illuminates a tall hooded figure standing by the subway stairs. I bite my lip. Has he seen me? (click here to see video)
Other than being asked to have all of the portraits include a pair of orange head phones, I was told that I didn’t need to provide sketches and just make a final illustration based off the text. I was surprised by this art direction and also greatly appreciated the amount of freedom going into it.
