Here is a page I illustrated for Julia Rothman’s upcoming book, The Who, the What and the When: 65 Artists Illustrate the Secret Accomplices of History. This image will be published along side other beautiful images and fascinating stories, fall 2014 with Chronicle Books.
For this book I was assigned John Maloof, Vivian Maier’s discoverer. I remember reading about Vivian last year when the NY Times did a few write up’s about her life and her work. She has a bit of a Henry Darger sort of undiscovered until she passed away sort of story. Vivian worked as a nanny but in her free time took a life times worth of photographs documenting the world around her in such a genuine way. She captured quiet moments in every day life that just seem so perfect. John Maloof just happened to discover her work while researching Chicago’s Northwest neighborhoods for a book project he was working on through.
The piece I did for the book is an homage to Vivian Maier, by referencing one of her self-portraits to make the connection with her discoverer. Thank you Julia for the assignment and thank you John for discovering such an incredible photographer.
